Living with ADHD can be a constant battle. My 14 year old son is very intelligent and he has ADHD but he won’t take any medication to help him control his symptoms because he doesn’t like the side effects. He is in his second semester at the local community college and currently has a 3.5 GPA there. Recently he was diligently trying to get his grade to an “A” in his Anatomy class although with a “B” he had the 6th highest grade in the class of 42 students.
Unfortunately he just can’t control his mouth, he talks constantly. So after... more

Will limiting my ADHD child’s sugar intake make a difference on my child’s attention span, ability to stay focused, or hyper activity? According to medical science, it does not. However, the articles I found, and quoted from below, go on to say that many parents disagree with the findings of medical science.
I personally have tried long-term, sugar intake, limiting for two of my ADD children thinking it would make a difference. For example, if I made cookies I would only give them each one or... more
Your child may be at an increased risk for an autism spectrum disorder if he fails to respond to his name by one year of age according to a new study from the M.I.N.D. institute at the University of California. However, early identification and intervention can result in overall better outcomes for children affected... more

Scientists at Rockefeller University are trying to understand a process of superinfection exclusion and believe that finding a way to recreate it therapeutically could create new avenues of treatment for Hepatitis C. They tried to infect cells with variants of the hepatitis C virus that had already been infected with a hepatitis C virus they were able to grow in a cell culture. They were unable to infect these grown cells with the variants until they introduced a drug that was capable of inhibiting virus replication. Hepatitis C virus is spread... more
My thirteen year old daughter decided to get even with me yesterday for reprimanding her for lying. She was caught and once she realized that it didn’t take long for the confession. In the past it has taken days or hours to get confessions, so I’m very happy we’ve crossed that hurdle. I reminded her for the hundredth time that lying causes me to not trust her; therefore she won’t be allowed to go places unless I’m able to accompany her.
Apparently she was getting even with me for not letting her go to AWANA after she had lied to me... more
LuLu finished her FastForward for Language training in mid-March. Fast ForWord is a brain-based software that improves auditory processing, language processing and ultimately reading skills. Scientific Learning Corp, the makers of Fast ForWord, claim that their program helps 90% of all children. I’m happy to report that LuLu is in that 90%. On her initial post-test (there will be another post-test in three months), she showed significant gains in phonological areas, especially Word Discrimination and... more
There is much going on in the world of autism lately. Information and misinformation abound. Controversies arise. And one thing is for certain…whatever causes autism, however it’s acquired…it’s on the rise. The CDC itself now acknowledges that 1 out of 150 children have an autistic spectrum disorder. Something this widespread is finally getting a great deal of attention. While many behavioral interventions, such as ABA are found effective for many, what may be even more effective (and is definitely more controversial) are the biomedical treatments... more

Our fourteen year old son asked if he could take our one year old granddaughter outside to play. “That would be wonderful,” I told him as I was trying to cook supper and she really wanted to go outside. Happily they went out to swing and enjoy the mild spring weather.
About fifteen minutes later my adult daughter came walking in the door, unexpectedly as I thought I was going to take my granddaughter home after our visit, carrying her crying daughter. She looked rather upset and asked me why her daughter was outside alone. “Where is Lane?” I asked, “Wasn’t... more
I have to admit that when I think about scientist working diligently to find cures for diseases it really didn’t occur to me that ADD was one of them. However, it makes sense when you realize the number of children affected by ADD who are using medication. According to www.MedicineNet.com
"More complete studies in community samples indicate actual rates to be 4% to 12%, and occurring three times more often in boys than... more
