Calling all parents of kids with FAS, autism, schizophrenia or yet-diagnosed extreme behaviors…does your child have Pyroluria? Now’s a good time to find out. Pyroluria is the name given to extreme Vitamin B6 deficiency or the production of too much "kryptopyrrole" (KP) or "hemepyrrole" (HP) in the blood.

The symptoms of excess urinary kryptopyrrole include poor tolerance of physical and emotional stress, mood swings, depression, sensitivity to light, noise and other tactile sensitivities. Later symptoms can range from severe depression to chronic schizophrenia.

Forty percent of alcoholics have Pyroluria, so this topic should be of particular interest to those families who have children with FASD, ARND, etc. It has also been linked to autism, schizophrenia, ADHD, ODD and depression.

The encouraging news is that Pyroluria can be identified with a simple urine test and can be treated with B6 and zinc (under the care of a practitioner to ensure the right types and dosages).
