Exhausted & Confused…Pass the Caffeine!

While this doesn’t happen nearly as often as it used to, when I spent the first 2+ years of LuLu’s life with us sleep deprived, LuLu is back to not sleeping through the night. And I’m back to looking for culprits.

Last night, instead of just waking up and then settling back in, she woke up at 2 am and wasn’t able to go back to sleep at all. LuLu is not an easy child to ignore, or to settle in to a self-directed activity at 2 am when her stomach is upset and all is not right in her world. So I doctored her as best I could, but she was still wide awake. And I was not.

Super Dad was leaving for out-of-town business and Kay starts her last few days of dress rehearsal for her show opening this Thursday. So I knew uninterrupted sleep was important to them. I took LuLu to the basement, so we wouldn’t disturb anyone. And guess what we did…school. That’s right…school.

LuLu suggested it, and once I could pry my eyes open enough, I was able to help her. She worked through some grammar and language arts sheets on her own while I dozed. But for her long division, I needed to start swilling the coffee. Super Dad got up about the time she was finishing up the math and she crawled onto the sofa and fell asleep around 7:30. I got Kay to school, answered some emails and blogged. And realized I felt like I’d been hit by a truck!

It was a feeling I remembered from my maternity leave days with Kay and the two sleepless years with LuLu as a toddler. Super Dad’s advice was to crawl in bed for a nap while LuLu was sleeping. Good thinking. So I trekked up to my bedroom for a quick snooze, just as the workers were arriving next door to finish putting a new roof on my neighbor’s house. Oh well…

Now I’m trying to figure out the cause of LuLu’s intestinal distress, sleeplessness and overall not feeling well. There are three possibilities – a virus, female issues or a new med we started on Thursday. No clear answers, so I’m back to being super sleuth mom on no sleep.

It’s days like today that I’m glad she’s being homeschooled and that I didn’t have to slip on some business suit and commute into an office. On days like today, I’m also glad to have my trusty Starbucks cup!
