It’s not everyday a news crew comes to your house, but today this was a legitimate question. I was being interviewed about our school issues (more on that at a later date), so as I was scurrying around this afternoon, I told LuLu that she needed to pick up some toys and clothes and take them to her room.
She, of course, wanted to know why. When I explained that it was because the woman from TV was coming, her reply was
“Mom, I watch the news all the time and there are lots of people on there whose houses aren’t clean!”
She leaves me once speechless again.
Truth is I should have cleaned my kitchen better, as they filmed in there. Sad thing was they wanted to film me at the computer, but my office is such a mess, that I had to decline. Piles of IEP documents, piles of insurance filings and medical bills, piles of research on biomedical interventions…and then there’s the ATN stuff, lesson plans for Ladybug Elementary, the church event we’re planning. Well, it’s organized into piles, but looks a bit like a paper recycling center.
The interview was clearly not about my housekeeping abilities (or lack thereof), but about the right thing for LuLu and other kids with neurological and developmental disabilities. And LuLu was in her usual form…outgoing and so curious about everything they were doing. She wasn’t around for most of the interview (why make her anxious talking about all that stuff). But when she returned, they shot some filler footage of her playing the piano (an on-again; off-again hobby of hers). And she wanted plenty of the reporter’s attention, which was fine, because it gave her some insight into who LuLu is, and who we are.
What happens next? I don’t know. This is an investigative report, so the reporter has more territory to cover and information to gather. But I’ll definitely let you know if/when it airs so you can check out my nicely vacuumed living room and my less-than-clean kitchen!

She’s right, you know. Those crack houses shown in drug bust video are always so untidy. You’d think they would have picked up just a bit!
LOL at Sandra’s comment.
Julie, wow, that’s pretty exciting – I did the same thing when we had the newspaper come out to take still photos and my hubby thought I was nuts because it was just photos.
Keep us posted on when it airs!
You go girl!!!
I stuff all the piles into a cabinet when people are coming!! The TV crew would be hard pressed to find a “white glove” spot in my house as well, but my kiddo is happy and that’s more important to me.
Having people over is the preferred method of housecleaning for many people!
Go Julie! You know doubt did your usual great job of advocating for your child, and others like her.
