Here’s a picture of Kay and her new love…she calls him “Henry”. He’s an older model, high mileage Volvo, but he looks as good as a brand new Ferrari to her. Kay passed her driving exam on Tuesday, and drove herself to school yesterday.

And already I’m realizing just how beneficial this is to me. Last night, for example, Kay took LuLu to Wednesday night activities at our church, while I met LuLu’s teachers for an IEP meeting. While I was very nervous about this, it all worked out fine.

It introduces a whole new level of things to worry about, though. I now have to worry about when she’s on the road and why she hasn’t called (so far it’s been because she forgot). And because Kay is definitely directionally challenged, I also worry about her getting lost.

But nothing thrills LuLu more than the opportunity to go somewhere with Kay in Henry. (I’m calling the car Hank the Tank…just can’t resist!) So far they successfully navigated two trips alone.

And it has led to the inevitable discussion of how much longer it is until LuLu gets to drive. Legally she could get a permit 4 years from now; but I can’t imagine that being a possibility. With such a short attention span and no impulse control, I have a hard time imagining that developmentally she’ll be any where near read to practice driving at 15. Yet, I’m trying not to write off anything at this point…because we just don’t’ know.

What I do know was that Tuesday was a glorious day, except for the hour’s wait at the license bureau (even with an appointment). LuLu was extraordinarily patient with that process; Kay was extraordinarily worried. And it all resulted in Kay’s ability to jump inside Hank the Tank and drive off into the great unknown.

Oops, grab me some tissues, I think I’m going to cry again!

    Yet another milestone….

Hate to be the one to break it to you Julie, but this is merely one of many! But never was the illustration of independence more effective for us than when our little girl earned her license. Her car is a Plymouth Neon, and named “Big Red”.

Does Kay have a cell phone? We found this to really help some of the anxiety on both ends, since we could always get ahold of each other whenever necessary, and it was available for emergencies, Since our daughter is also directionally challanged, we made sure that her phone has GPS. Also, does Kay have a membership in AAA? That may also help with anxiety, especially in covering emergencies.
