Check out these two awesome moms, Amy Baskin and Heather Fawcett, Canadian moms of special needs children (one autistic and one with Aspergers). Recognizing the unique pressures of raising children with special needs on their marriages, careers, finances, other families members and friendships, these two decided to write about the experience.
The result is a book called More than A Mom, a handbook of sorts full of practical parenting advice and sensitive to the joys and stresses that come with parenting a special needs child. The authors interviewed over 500 moms of kids with special needs. The book pays homage to the gifts that come with parenting special needs kids, but doesn’t lose sight of the strains this challenging parenting puts on marriages, physical health, careers and outside friendships.
As Baskin puts it “there is always something more you should be doing.” But at some point, you have to say enough, while you take some time for yourself. Because if mom falls apart, she’s no good to anyone.
“It’s issues all women struggle with, but for us it’s magnified 100 times.”
And it’s time that someone wrote such a book, recognizing that at some point each of us has to find a way past the all-consuming task of parenting our special needs child back into a life that is full and balanced. Otherwise, just how do we stay in this situation for the long haul???

Great idea to write this book! Where can I buy it? I am the parent of a now adult 32 year old adopted child. I would like to read your book.
It’s not MY book (I dream of someday writing…) But you can find out more about this book on http://www.morethanamom.net.
