Do you ever wonder if this is what is going through your child’s head when you hear a reason that is so ridiculous that you don’t know whether to laugh or cry? “My parents are so stupid; they’ll never figure out that this is a lie.” Time after time, your child’s deception has been exposed, and yet “try, try, again seems to be the motto when it comes to concocting lies.” Do you wonder, perhaps even aloud, just how stupid does my child think I am?
I’m ashamed to admit that I have uttered these exact words quite often. I do realize that saying this doesn’t help the situation. I’m sure that my children just take their minds to some other place or a song, and ignore my ranting all together.
Yesterday, the children were to do their computer homework in the morning. I had them up and getting ready at 7:30. This gives me time to help the seven year old with his schoolwork because he can’t read the instruction on his own yet.

Some how the SQL server had been turned off on the computer the 10-year-old uses. This also happens to be the computer that I usually write and blog on. I found out at 10 o’clock that she couldn’t sign on to the computer. Hmmm. What had she been doing for the past two hours?
When I came to fix the problem, I noticed that the internet explorer was open and minimized. I wonder who has been on the internet I asked. At first, she had no idea. However, she quickly changed that to, “I guess I accidentally got on the internet.”
Maybe…
I minimized the screen to see if the icons for signing on to Switched on School House and Internet Explorer happened to be next to each other. One was at the top-left of the screen and the other was at the bottom-right. Then I noticed something else a bit odd.
Now that I have DSL, for the past three months (YEAH!), whenever the internet is opened seven homepages open automatically. One of those homepages is Zimbra, which is our email for Adoption blogs. I have it set up to automatically open the first email so I can read it. When an email is read, it turns gray; those not yet opened are black. Well, there was one gray, two black, two gray, and then there were two more black. What this tells me is that someone signed onto the Internet more than once in the past couple of hours.
I asked if she had accidentally signed onto the Internet twice. She went with that idea for a couple of minutes. However, she’s a bright girl and decided to tell the truth at this point. At our house, if you tell the truth, you don’t get into trouble.
She had signed onto the internet to try to fix the SQL server. She had no idea what she was going to look for on the internet to fix the computer, but that was her plan. Somehow, she had also opened the computer’s software repair wizard. I found that in the recycle bin. Thank goodness, for the restore option that is available.
It took me about 30 seconds to turn the server back on because there is an icon for it on the task bar.
