Talking Clocks for Special Needs

A couple of my readers suggested talking alarms for my daughter with special needs after my recent post, “Is it Time to Give Up?” For over a year now, we have tried planners, calendars, and posted notes to try to help her but she can’t seem to follow a schedule or keep track of time. Therefore, I searched GOOGLE for “talking products for visually impaired.” My reader suggested products for the vision impaired because they talk.

I did find many products available, a wide range of prices some below $10, and some are quite stylish. Some of the product descriptions were not clear on how many alarms they had. Other product descriptions were not clear about whether the alarm was a ring or if I could record messages. Therefore, I chose two products that clearly had four alarms that I could record my own messages.

I was able to purchase an alarm clock and a watch for $50 for her birthday that is a couple of weeks away. We can use the clock to remind her to take her morning and evening medications, as well as to shower and brush her teeth. We can use her watch to remind her to eat lunch, do her job, and take her piano lesson.

She is about to turn 14 and Super Dad and I are hoping that the talking alarms will improve her ability to keep a job or live independently in the not to distant future. I hope it works, because I was about to give up and just start telling her what to do all day, as I used to. However, she really needs to learn this skill if she is to have any kind of independent life as an adult.

Everyday she is supposed to get her lunch between 11am and 1pm, but can’t seem to pull this off. She can make whatever she wants and have as much as she wants. You would think this would be an incentive in itself, because she loves to eat. Although you can’t tell by looking at her, she is 5’5” and weighs 97 pounds. She is lucky enough to have her birthmother’s figure and metabolism. However, I do not allow her to miss any meals for this reason.

She is supposed to do her job everyday at 1pm. Because we have seven other children at home, she certainly has many clues, because they all follow the same schedule.

I am really looking forward to the arrival of these products. I will be sure to keep you posted on how well they work.

Amy doesn't have any FAS or any other biological/metabolic reason we could identify that prevented her from mastering the ability to follow through on responsibilities as you describe. But she never followed through. There were countless examples of things she refused or "forgot" to do that created untold complications for her, but she never changed her approach.

I'll be most anxious to see how the talking alarms work!

Great move! I'll be interested to see if these products work for your daughter as well. I have a feeling I'll need to purchase these eventually. Constant reminding several kids to stay on task and schedule is wearing me down!
