The Maddening Link Between OCD and ODD

LuLu carries both Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder in her alphabet soup of labels. Some doctors label the ODD more as Intermittent Explosive Disorder, but regardless of what you call it, the combination is deadly.

LuLu gets stuck, so stuck that if you try to dissuade her she becomes increasingly agitated until she explodes. Or if you try to ignore her she persists on with incredible defiance. If you try to reason with her…well she usually ends up raging then too, or engaging you in an endless game of “Let’s Make a Deal.”

The bottom line is that it’s exhausting! Here’s today’s episode of OCD/ODD. Do not read this while eating!!!!

Background: Last week when we stopped in DC to visit friends, we toured one friend’s art studio where she had small animal carcasses in alcohol that she was going to use in her nature artwork. This immediately became an obsession for LuLu and she wanted one to take home. That, of course, was not an option. She did several little mini-meltdowns about the animals, but was dissuaded by the idea that if she came home and found a dead animal she could preserve it for herself. Well…

Yesterday she found a headless chipmunk under the bushes in front of our house (thanks cat!) She was so excited she could hardly see straight! (Wait, don’t get nauseated yet…it gets better…) So she soaked the poor decapitated critter in alcohol and then in bleach, overnight.

This morning she arose at the crack of dawn to retrieve him. And in her mind she was going to bring him into our house and keep him in her room. Nope…even this mom has limits. No dead animals in the house sounds reasonable to me.

So the battle of the highly determined women was on. She was locked in and I had decided this was a decision that was going to stand. She argued and tried to make deals, she continuously brought it back up, she snuck into the house three times with the critter, she stomped, whined, kicked, complained.

We went toe to toe for the entire morning. And then, by some miracle, after lunch she dropped it. (Of course, I’m emotionally exhausted!)

Actually OCD and ODD are related, in that they occur in the same part of the brain: the limbic system. And specifically they are linked to the cingulate gyrus, known as the “gear shifter” of the brain. This is an area that when we did the QEEGs of LuLu’s brain showed great abnormality. She gets STUCK easily.

So what do you do when your gear shifter is stuck? Well, Omega 3s are a natural lubricant for this. They really do help with overall calming and ability to shift your emotional state. Other relaxation and calming strategies can work, too.

Sometimes I just identify for her that she’s “stuck” and that helps. Other times, we just have to ride it out.

I hate the OCD/ODD/IED combination. Don't you find yourself just wanting to yell, "Oh, just cut it out!" when you know perfectly well that the brain wiring makes that totally impossible! I find it so challenging to figure out how much my daughter is able to fight the OCD and how much to push her to do that vs. knowing when she is too overwhelmed and is unable to stop from losing it. Anafranil at least made life more tolerable. She loves to watch Monk because, as she says, "He's just like me!"

"No dead animals in the house sounds reasonable to me."

LOL

Yep, that's a rule in our house, too. :0)

I hate this combo as well, but picturing LuLu with this creature still has me laughing.

I'll send all dead creatures to your house :)

I have a daughter, who was exposed to everything inutero, Meth, opiates, alcohol..and more. She is 35 months and has never been a great sleeper. Very active in her sleep , even more active when awake. She awakens in the morning as if she has already had 10 cups of coffee, sadly before I have even had one. She takes clonidine and melatonin at bedtime. It help at the beginning, but, she gets up all night, and when she is supposed to be "asleep" she is tossing and turning, talking, yelling, hitting and kicking. Sometimes, she jumps up screaming to get the bugs and spiders off of her.Her OT is worried that Kate is having absent seizures. We tried 4 times to have a sleep EEG. They gave her very strong suppositories, but; she never fell asleep. It was the same for a MRI, but; on the 4th try they gave her meds through an IV. She did fall asleep, but, woke up in the MRI machine after only 10 minutes. Her Neuro. just told us that he can't do any more for our daughter. He said she has I.E.D. and that she needs to see a child psych.asap. (None in the Las vegas area that takes new patients) He said that she needs to be put on "heavy drugs" for the rest of her life. When we asked about the possible seizures, he said " I don't think she is having any" WHAT?? He has never seen what we have seen. He has never seen her glassy eyed and "not being there in the moment" He has never seen her tremor. The OT wrote to him, but; I guess he has a crystal ball. I know I have not slept very well, and I am not always pleasant. Kate, never has restful sleep, so I know that does not help with her behavior. She does go from extreme anger, to extreme emotional break downs. I know that what she was exposed to inutero affected her brain ( she was also diagnosed with mild CP L side). She is extremely bright.Talked and walked very young. Because of her vocabulary, she gets "denied" services. She receives medicaid coverage, as she was "pre exisiting". They do not cover sleep studies. My only question would be " if the drugs do not slow down her brain, wouldn't that be a contributing factor to her behavior? I asked that question to another Neuro. fro Stanford.. he asked me " What medical school did I graduate from "? My child is sensitive to sights and sounds. Easily distracted and copies what others due. If they babble, she will babble (for atleast a week) I am so frustrated..anyone have the same problems ? Oh and they also think she may be Bipolar.
