A couple of months ago I wrote a blog on a Saturday desperately seeking immediate advice from my knowledgeable readers. I thought you might be interested in an update on how it has turned out. The first/birth father of one of our children had just called me that day from jail. He was asking for bail money. Actually, this was the first time anyone had asked me for bail money. I was somewhat at a loss on how to handle the situation, which is why I brought it to my readers for advice.

I had known this man for about three years and to my knowledge, he hadn’t been in any trouble. I knew that it wasn’t his habit to use alcohol or drugs. I also knew that he had recently lost his job and was unemployed. We were not in a financial position to give him the bail money. I was a little concerned about his ability to pay it back, however he had previously maintained employment for six or seven years.

Initially I bought some time by telling him that I needed to discuss it with my husband. That gave me time to talk to hubby and ask my reader’s opinions. I was a little surprised that my husband was willing to loan him the money. However, my husband is also aware of this first father’s positive attributes and hubby is usually a good judge of character.

In the end, we decided to loan him the money and I typed up an unofficial contract for him to sign. I told him that we expected him to pay at least $25 every time he received a paycheck. Since he was unemployed at the time, I didn’t know if that would be weekly or biweekly. It turned out that he had a job lined up and he receives a paycheck weekly. He has faithfully made six payments to us so far.
