I have a sister-in-law and her husband who are trained school psychologists. One is working in that position and the other is testing and identifying young children for disabilities in the local IU for early intervention.
They totally and absolutely have been brainwashed by their graduate classes that the schools hold the power to cure all ills. That the schools have a right to each and every student, that parents who don't send their children to the public schools are doing their children a disservice and/or endangering their future as productive, capable adults.
They used to be sane individuals but something happened in that master's program that warped their thinking and made them the saviors of mankind. And I can't believe they are the only ones with this challenge.

Yes - that child is MINE and I make the final decisions. I entrust him to you to educate him for so many hours a week but when it all comes to the end - he is MY responsibility. Why do they want to bully us?

Julie, your machine is better than ours. I got a call, "...your student missed one or more periods today". Problem, two of my sons go to that school, which one? Turns out it was the younger one who had been homeschooled by the district for three months at that point, due to a medical problem. No appology for a useless message, just a huffy attitude, that is wasn't their problem to name the child or make sure the report was correct.

You are right about the degrading of the parental position, the school wants the teacher to be number one, and for you to accept your place. IEPs can be wonderful corrective devices for power trips. John

Oh gosh - yea! To some it IS just semantics. But, as you point out, it goes much deeper than that. That is one advantage that we feel we have in a smaller school in a smaller district.

One of my pet peeves is when those dealing with my children call me "mom", as in , "Mom, do you want to come here and sign these papers?" or "Mom. what do you think?" What ever happened to using actual names?
