Coming out of Austin today is a very disturbing article. Seems the parents of two girls (kindergarteners no less) have filed suit against the Eanes Independent School District and an elementary school principal for failing to protect their daughters from sexual assault by a classmate.

Now that everyone is collectively gasping at the thought that a kindergartener could ever remotely be responsible for sexually assaulting a classmate, let’s throw in an additional twist. The mother of the alleged abuser had already told the school district about the potential dangerous behaviors of her daughter, because her daughter had been a victim of sexual abuse.

If you read the article, you might be fascinated, as I was, to discover that the mother of one of the kindergarteners who was abused by her classmate seems to be very sympathetic to the abuser and her plight…referring to all three girls as “falling through the cracks” where the school is concerned.

This court case, now filed in U.S. District Court, should prove very interesting though. Although the article doesn’t specify, those of us in the adoption world can’t help but wonder if the abuser is an adoptee. What I was able to learn about the Eanes Independent School District is that it’s one of the wealthiest in Texas. That and the fact that the mom of this girl was open and forthright in sharing her daughter’s abuse history with the school indicates to me that perhaps her mother had nothing to do with this child’s previous abuse history…and just might be her adoptive mother.

Whatever the facts are, there will be much interesting about how this case progresses. How schools deal with traumatized children and their behaviors (in this case her extreme and dangerous behaviors) is definitely a central point to this case. I, for one, will be staying tune to learn more!

but help me understand what about this makes you suspect that the abuser might be an adooptee? unfortunately, a tragic number of children have sexual abuse histories. not just those who have come in contact with social service agencies, or adoption agencies, or foster care. so that seems like a bit of a leap to me. now watch, your assumption will turn out to be accurate and boy will that be a bummer.

granted -- all you said. I hope I'm wrong. It's just a gut feeling I got when I read the mom informed the school prior to the incidents about the potential for predatory behavior AND the way the victim's mom was understanding of the abuser and her parents' plight...hmmm...

Would love to find out I assumed too much!
